The ResponsibleSteel™ Standard is established to support a more responsible steel industry. Certification against the Standard is designed to enable transparency on the production and processing of steel.

Steel is the world’s most important engineering and construction material. Whether used in the transport, infrastructure, construction or energy sector, there is a growing expectation that it is responsibly sourced and produced. The steel industry has a significant environmental and social footprint, from natural resources and water management to human and labour rights. It is estimated to contribute between 7-9% of global carbon dioxide emissions alone, making it a major player in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The ResponsibleSteel™ Standard incorporates 12 principles designed to address such challenges by supporting the responsible production and processing of steel. Any steel site obtaining certification against the ResponsibleSteel™ Standard by an independent third-party such as DNV GL will have shown that its site is operated in a responsible manner. In a market demanding more transparency and sustainable business practices, certification provides assurance to stakeholders that steel is produced and processed responsibly and creates a competitive advantage. It helps differentiate from the competition, improves attractiveness toward consumer facing industries with a green agenda and lowers ESG risks.
Over the next months, ResponsibleSteel™ will develop additional requirements for the responsible sourcing of input materials and greenhouse gas emissions, to help identify steel companies that are leading examples when it comes to building responsible supply chains and addressing climate change. Certification against these additional requirements will only be possible if sites are also meeting the existing ResponsibleSteel™ Standard.
